Do I need to log in to Instagram?

No login is needed, and you should never type your Instagram password into a downloader site. Public posts are read without any account; private accounts cannot be fetched at all.

Why did my link fail?

The usual reasons: the account is private, the post was deleted, or Instagram is temporarily limiting requests. Check the link opens in a browser while logged out — if it does not, the tool cannot read it either.

Can I download from a private account I follow?

No. Following someone does not make their posts public, and this tool does not use your login. Ask the owner to send you the file, or use Instagram's own save feature inside the app.
