Unlock PDF — Remove Password Protection

You know the password — you just don't want to type it every time, or the portal you are uploading to refuses protected files. This tool opens your PDF with the password you give it and saves a clean copy that needs no password at all. It cannot guess, crack or bypass a password: without the correct one it can do nothing, which is exactly how it should be. The pages of the unlocked copy are re-rendered as high-quality images, so text is no longer selectable — a fair trade for a working, openable file. Everything happens in your browser; the document and its password never leave your device.

Only ever unlock documents you own or have the right to open. The password is used locally in this tab and is never sent anywhere.

Choose a file to begin — nothing is uploaded, everything happens on your device.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose the locked PDF.
  2. Type the password that opens it (the tool cannot guess or crack it).
  3. Click Unlock PDF.
  4. Download the unlocked copy and keep it somewhere safe.

Worked example

A PDF locked with the password 'open123' in our test opened with that password and saved as a clean copy that asks for no password at all.

Frequently asked questions

I forgot the password. Can this tool recover it?

No — and be wary of any tool that promises it can. Modern PDF encryption is strong; without the correct password the content is mathematically out of reach. Your options are the person or system that set the password, or a backup copy of the file without protection.

Is it legal to remove a password from a PDF?

From your own documents, generally yes — unlocking a file you own and have the password to is ordinary document management. Removing protection from someone else's document without permission may breach their terms or the law. This tool only works with the correct password, which keeps it on the right side of that line.

Why is the unlocked file's text not selectable?

The PDF is opened by the reading engine and each page is re-drawn as a high-quality image in the new file — that is what makes the copy open everywhere with zero password machinery. The words look identical; they are pictures of words. If you need editable text, the unprotected original is the file to get.

Where does my password go?

Nowhere. It is typed into this page, handed to the PDF engine inside your browser tab, and forgotten when you close the tab. There is no server involved at any point.
