Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo without uploading it anywhere. This free background remover runs an AI model directly in your web browser: pick a picture — a product shot, a portrait, a logo, a pet — and it cuts out the subject and gives you a transparent PNG you can drop onto any design, marketplace listing or presentation. Because the processing happens on your own device, your images are never sent to a server, which makes it safe for product photos and personal pictures alike. The first use downloads the on-device AI model (about 40 MB) from a public CDN; after that, removals take a few seconds and work from the browser cache.

Portraits, products and logos with a clear subject work best. Large photos are processed at full quality but may take longer on older phones.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a JPG or PNG photo with a clear subject.
  2. Click Remove background and wait for the on-device AI.
  3. Preview the cut-out on the checkerboard (that means transparent).
  4. Download the transparent PNG for listings and designs.

Worked example

A product photo shot on a kitchen table becomes a clean cut-out on transparency, ready to drop onto a white marketplace background.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image really never uploaded to a server?

Correct. This tool loads an open-source AI background-removal library (@imgly/background-removal) into your browser and runs the model on your own device — the image itself is never transmitted. Only the library and its model files are downloaded, once, from a public content delivery network. That is the opposite of most "free" background removers, which send your photo to their servers; it makes this tool suitable for unreleased product photos and personal pictures.

Why did the first removal take longer than later ones?

The AI model files (roughly 40 MB) download on first use and are then kept in your browser cache. Later removals skip that download and typically finish in a few seconds on a desktop, or a little longer on a phone. Processing speed depends on your device's processor and the size of the photo — it does not depend on our servers, because there aren't any involved.

What kind of photos give the cleanest cut-outs?

Photos with one clear subject and some contrast between the subject and its background work best: product shots, portraits, pets and logos. Very busy scenes, hair against a similar-coloured background, and glass or transparent objects are harder for any AI remover. If an edge looks rough, a cleaner source photo — good light, plain background — usually fixes it better than re-running the same image.

What can I use the transparent PNG for?

Marketplace and shop product listings (a cut-out on a clean white or branded background looks far more professional), social media posts and thumbnails, presentations, stickers, and ID-style photos. The download is a full-resolution PNG with a transparent background, ready to place over any colour or design in your editor of choice.
