Tip Calculator
Working out a fair tip in your head while the server waits is no fun. This free tip calculator does it instantly: enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and you get the tip amount, the total with tip, and — if you are splitting the check — exactly what each person pays. It works as an everyday restaurant tip calculator and as a tip calculator for splitting the bill between friends, family or coworkers, so nobody overpays or under-tips by accident. It also doubles as a split bill calculator for group dinners, takeout orders and bar tabs of any size.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
Tipping is a custom, not a law, so there is no single required amount. As general guidance in the US, 15% of the bill is a common baseline for adequate sit-down service, 18–20% is typical for good service, and 22–25% is often used for excellent service or large groups. For takeout and counter service, smaller tips are common, and some people tip a flat dollar amount instead. Use the percentage you are comfortable with and adjust for the service you received.
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both approaches exist, but most people tip on the pre-tax amount — the cost of the food and drinks before sales tax is added — because tax is set by the government, not the restaurant. Tipping on the post-tax total is also fine and simply results in a slightly larger tip. If you want to tip pre-tax with this calculator, enter the subtotal shown on your check before the tax line.
How do I split a bill with tip evenly?
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the combined total by the number of people — that is exactly what this tip calculator for splitting the bill does. For example, a $100 bill with a 20% tip is $120 total; split between 4 people, each person pays $30, which includes their $5 share of the tip. Splitting after the tip (rather than splitting the bill and tipping separately) keeps every share equal.
